In areas where both species may be found, Sessile Trillium can be confused with the similar looking Little Sweet Betsy (Trillium-cuneatum). Sessile Trillium typically has rounded leaf tips, as opposed to Little Sweet Betsy's pointed tips, but that feature is highly variable and not sufficient for a definitive identification. Also, Sessile Trillium's anthers are about 1/2 or more the length of the petals, unlike Little Sweet Betsy's anthers which are always less than 1/2 the length of the petals. Sessile Trillium's pollen emerges from the inside of its anthers ('introse anther dehiscense'); Little Sweet Betsy's pollen emerges from the sides of its anthers ('latrose anther dehiscence').
