Family: Melanthiaceae (Bunchflower family)
Mid-Atlantic bloom time:
May - June
Mid-Atlantic fruit ripe:
July - August
Sterile Turkeybeard plants resemble tussocks of a bunchgrass, but the leaf bases are white and flattened and are obviously not those of a grass. The leaves remain gray-green to green throughout the winter. Episodic flowering of Turkeybeard often are stimulated by fire and canopy-opening disturbances (such as southern pine beetle outbreaks).
Some sources put Turkeybeard's genus Xerophyllum into its own family Xerophyllaceae (Beardgrass).
