Spanish Moss

Family: Bromeliaceae

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: April - June

Spanish Moss is not a moss nor a lichen; it is a flowering plant that often grows on larger trees, such as Baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) and Southern Live Oak, drooping down from branches.

Its species name means "resembling Usnea" because it superficially resembles beard lichen (genus Usnea). [For an example, see Silken Beard Lichen (Usnea hesperina).]
