Millboro Aster grows in shale barrens, shale woodlands, and prairie-like openings within them, and on calcareous sandstone capping a shale ridge. It is apparently endemic only to the western Virginia counties of Bath and Rockbridge. The tips of its phyllaries are squarrose with narrow, green central bands.
