Pencilflower's genus name Stylosanthes comes from the Greek words stylo, meaning "style", and anthos, meaning "flower". This refers to the stalk-like, hollow calyx tube that surrounds the pistil of the flower, which is also why this plant is called Pencilflower. Its leaves are trifoliate (i.e., divided into three leaflets), and each leaflet has a short bristle tip.
