Family: Asteraceae

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: May - July

Black-eyed Susan is one of the common early summer sights in the mid-Atlantic, flowering with bright yellow petals and dark brown center. Its stems and leaves are quite hairy (densly pubescent to hirsute).

The genus name Rudbeckia is in honor of Olaus Rudbeck, who was a professor of botany at the University of Uppsala in Sweden and was one of Linnaeus's teachers. The species name hirta refers to the numerous hairs on the leaves and stems.

Black-eyed Susan is the state flower of Maryland.
