Family: Plantaginaceae

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: June - November

American Plantain is commonly found in fields, lawns and other disturbed open habitats. It is reportedly edible, cooked or as salad greens.

American Plantain is often confused with the non-native Common Plantain (Plantago major), which also has similar broad leaves and floral spikes. American Plantain's petioles (base of the leaf structure) is usually purple and has no hairs, whereas Common Plantain's petioles are green and slightly pubescent.
