Family: Pinaceae (Pine family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: May - June
Mid-Atlantic fruit ripe: October - November

In the development of Shenandoah National Park, Red Spruce (along with Fraser Balsam Fir (Abies fraseri) and Table Mountain Pine (Pinus pungens)) was thought to be one of the interesting native conifers that could be used to break up the "monotonous hardwood dominance". It was grown in a Civilian Conservation Corps nursery at Big Meadows and planted throughout this area of the park. (read more at the park's website: Wilderness by Design?)
