Pennywort is a small (716 cm tall) native spring ephemeral that can often be hidden in the leaf litter. It is the only member of its genus. Each flower has four white petals fused into a tube that is divided midway into four slightly flaring narrow lobes. Each flower has four stamens with anthers that mature before the stigmas. Pennywort is largely mycoheterotrophic, deriving a substantial amount of its nutrition through fungal networks.
