Sweetbay Magnolia grows as large shrubs or small trees to 25 meters. Its leaves are evergreen to semi-deciduous and are glabrous above, but may be finely hairy beneath. Its flower are creamy white initially and brown with age, with 6-15 petal-like tepals. It seems to prefer acidic swamps, bogs, and wet flatwoods with nutrient-poor soils.
