Purple Loosestrife is an extremely noxious weed in the eastern United States, aggressively colonizing and coming to dominate a wide variety of freshwater wetlands, sometimes to the near exclusion of native vegetation. Its purple flowers are born in terminal spike-like thyrses, and have typically 12 stamen. On the lower stem, its leaves are opposite, and their bases are cordate to rounded.
