Pale-spiked Lobelia is a short-lived perennial, usually flowering below taller grasses and forbs. It produces a spike of white or pale blue flowers in the summer.
Pale-spiked Lobelia has several sub-species, including:
Lobelia spicata var. spicata,
the typical variety with leaves on its stem the same size as any basal leaves, if present.
Lobelia spicata var. scaposa,
which has mostly basal leaves, with only a few, much smaller stem leaves.
