Family: Campanulaceae (Bellflower family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: July - November

Indian Tobacco is native to eastern North America. It has the typical Lobelia flower shape, with two upper lip petals and three lower lip petals with colors ranging from lavender to blue to pale blue or white, often with yellow tinting on the inside. It has leaves along its stem, with dentate or serrate margins. Its fruiting calyxes cover the seed capsules and inflate to become somewhat spherical; this is where the species epithet 'inflata' name comes from.

While Indian Tobacco has had many traditional uses, its root is toxic and can be fatal if eaten.
