Jewelweed is a widespread and common plant that grows in moist, semi-shady areas. The fruit is an elongated capsule, which, when ripe, bursts open at the slightest touch (hence one of its common names, Touch-me-not).
Orange Jewelweed can be distingushed from Pale Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) not only by its darker color, but the 'spur' on the back of its flower curving up towards the front of the flower, instead of hanging down, perpendicular to the main body of the flower.
Medicinally, sap from the stem and leaves can be applied topically to relieve itching and pain from a variety of skin irritations, including hives, poison ivy, stinging nettle. The sap has also been shown to have anti-fungal properties and can be used to treat athlete’s foot.
