Family: Malvaceae
Mid-Atlantic bloom time: June - September
Common in tidal marshes and swamps and floodplain pools and ponds, the Swamp Rose-mallow in flower stands out with its large white to dark rose flowers with deep maroon centers. Its leaves are mostly unlobed, except perhaps slightly towards the tip. Note that the flowers are at the top of the plant, not along the stem like the Halberd-leaf Rose-mallow (Hibiscus laevis). Like most hibiscus, the reproductive structures stand out, protruding well beyond the dark center.
