Squirrel Corn

Family: Fumariaceae (Fumitory family; sometimes subsumed into the Papaveraceae poppy family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: April - May
Mid-Atlantic fruit ripe: June

One could make a good argument that the flowers on Squirrel Corn are some of the prettiest to be found amongst the early blooming mid-Atlantic area flora. Look for them in rich floodplane forests and on slopes in other somewhat wet areas.

The flowers are white tinged with purple/red /pink, and the leaves are deeply cut.

Compare this to the more common and closely related Dutchman's Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria).
