Family: Ranunculaceae (Buttercup family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: March - May

Delphinium tricorne's flowers grow in a raceme, where each flower's petal-like sepals grow together to form a long narrow spur at the back of the flower. The sepal colors range in color from violet to blue to white, or a mixture of these colors. Delphinium tricorne's leaves are deeply and palmately divided.

The genus name Delphinium comes from the Greek word for "dolphin", which Pedanius Dioscorides said refers somehow to the shape of the flowers. The specific epithet tricorne is Latin for "with three horns", which describes the shape of the fruit.
