Family: Orobanchaceae
Mid-Atlantic bloom time: May - June
Squawroot is a fully parasitic plant that occurs only where it can grow attached to the roots of some species of oak (Quercus spp.).
Its stems with numerous scale like flowers look somewhat like White Pine cones, which gives the plant its genus name Conopholis, with conos meaning 'cone’ and pholos meaning ‘scale’ in ancient Greek.
Despite the fact that a less-frequently used common name for this plant is Cancer-root, there is no evidence that it has any connection with the disease nor having ever been used to treat cancer.
