Gray Birch reaches its southern-most portion of its range in Virginia's Shenanadoah National Park. It is intolerant of shade, and responds positively to disturbances such as fire. It grows to 10 meters and has a bushy habit. It has a tight, non-foliating grayish-white bark, with prominent triangular black patches below its branches. Its leaves are broadly triangular and doubly serrated, with 5–18 pairs of lateral veins.
