Family: Araliaceae (Ginseng family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: June - September

Devil's Walking Stick is a small tree, growing to 10 m (33 feet). Its compound leaves can be up to 1 m long. Devil's Walking Stick's characteristic prickly trunk earned it the common name, particularly since the trunk diameter would otherwise make it a good choice for a walking stick.

Devil's Walking Stick's non-flowering/fruiting parts are very similar to the non-native Japanese Angelica Tree (Aralia elata) (also called the Korean Angelica-tree). The Devil's Walking Stick flowering and fruiting parts are typically elevated above the leafy parts, whereas the Japanese Angelica Tree's flowering and fruiting parts typically rest on the uppermost leafy parts of the plant.
