Family: Amaranthaceae (Amaranth / Pigweed family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: July - October

Spiny Amaranth, true to its common name, has spikes present on the flowers and spines present at nodes. Its flowers are green, lack petals, and have terminal and axillary spikes. Male flowers are at the end of the flower spike, while the female flowers are at the bottom.
