Family: Asteraceae
Mid-Atlantic bloom time: April - November
Yarrow is often found in disturbed fields and open areas. It can grow to 1 meter in height, with leaves that are finely cut - almost feathery - and are arranged in spirals around the stems. It forms dense clusters of flowers at the top of its stalk that somewhat resemble Queen Anne's Lace (Daucus carota), without the single dark flower at the center.
Yarrow has historically been used to staunch the flow of blood frome wounds. The genus Achillea isnamed for the Greek character Achilles who supposedly carried it in his army to treat battle wounds. The species name millefolium means many or thousand leaves.
Young leaves are purported to be a pleasant leaf vegetable when cooked like spinach, or in a soup. Yarrow is sweet with a slight bitter taste. The leaves reportedly can also be dried and used as a herb in cooking.
