Family: Boletaceae

Mid-Atlantic emergence time: Summer - Fall

Two species of mushrooms are called "Old Man of the Woods", of which this (Strobilomyces confusus) is the second. The other (Strobilomyces floccopus) has a range that greatly overlaps this one.

MushroomExpert.com says,

"Similar to Strobilomyces floccopus and often misidentified as that species, Strobilomyces confusus features smaller, more erect scales on its cap. The scales feel firm and semi-prickly, as opposed to the soft, woolly scales on Strobilomyces floccopus."
