Intermediate Wood Fern, Evergreen Wood Fern

Family: Dryopteridaceae (Wood Fern family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: June - September

Intermediate Wood Fern is the only lacy fern that is evergreen in our area. Its key ID features are:

• its fronds are evergreen and mostly tripinnate
• the margins of the pinnules are serrate and bristle-tipped
• the sori are midway ("intermediate") between midvein and margins of pinnules (usually closer to the midveins)

Compare it with the non-lacy but otherwise somewhat similar Marginal Wood Fern (Dryopteris marginalis), which has its sori on the margins (edges) of the pinnules.
