Family: Lycopodiaceae (Clubmoss family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: early winter

Crowsfoot is evergreen and has multiple strobili (2-4 usually, sometimes more) clustered at the tip of a long vertical stalk (peduncle). It was also once one of the principal clubmoss species used for collection of lycopodium powder, used as a primitive flashpowder.

It is superfically similar to Crowsfoot (Dendrolycopodium obscurum) which is found in similar habitats. However, Crowsfoot grows in strands that can easily be pulled up with a light tug. This resulted in it once being widely harvested and sold as Christmas greenery (despite being highly flammable), and populations were widely depleted for this reason. Please don't do this!
