Family: Dennstaedtiaceae (Bracken family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: June - September

Hay-scented Fern can be found in woodland clearings. It has sharp pointed tips, and turns yellow to brown in late summer. It has hairy stems, both on the stipe (the lower stem part) and the rachis (the upper part, where the pinna are). This is a useful feature when comparing it to New York Fern (Parathelypteris noveboracensis), which often grows in shady patches nearby, but lacks the hairs.
